    Looking at a trail rig

hey guys one of my buddies wants to sell me a early 80s model datsun pickup, and seeing how my dodge is my DD im looking into getting something to wheel in for cheap and this is $300. He says it runs and all the 4 wheel drive works. Its a standard and it IFS are the two main down falls i see. I would be interested in doing a SAS since its just a trail rig. Let me know what you think, good idea or bad? Ill bring it back with me Christmas if i decide to get it.

Could be a very interesting rig. Cheap and oddball rig don't always necessarily go together, but with this group anything's possible. Could definitely be fun though. Do an SAS, then if the drivetrain doesn't perform well, a toyota drivetrain probably wouldn't be too hard to source at a good price and would probably fit like a glove.

go for it. for 300 bucks its worth it if you dont have anything else in mind. saves more than that in damage on the dd too. and you can pull it.

I'd be better to find an old Toyota because the aftermarket supports them but it's hard to beat a $300 4x4 that runs.

I don't know how hard-core you plan to wheel in the future, but If I were to start someplace I would find an old toyota so you don't have to rig a bunch of crap like Chadnutz did with his Mazda. He tried to adapt the Mazda drivetrain to a Toyota case it it just never worked right - he also swapped in a Toyota front axle.

I know a guy who who put a crazy body on a toy drivetrain that turned out pretty slick. Turns out he also built his own frame and put more than a little time into it.

How hard to put a datsun body on a toy frame....

why not leave the toy body on the toy frame instead of swapping for a minitruck body of equal proportions?

find a $300 scout, it will already have SAS and an automatic

Flem - I have dibs on the first 300 dollar scout. FYI the one (2?!) in hockley went for 400. I'd like to hear it run if I'm going over 400 personally.

Do it, just don't try to go big right away. Beat the snot out of it and learn how to make it cruise obstacles it shouldn't. Upgrade a little at a time, as stuff breaks. Will make you a better driver in the long run (as will the manual tranny)

because everyone is entitled to a free one, they are distributed along the same lines as the draft. Your number will come up eventually.

What happens? I end up wheeling more often than you do?

.....oh wait you have an excuse! You couldn't make time while working on a scooter that went 100 MPH out in the desert and jerking off to your life size poster of Ted Nugent...
