It is not a u-joint. The play is in the stub shaft to Unit bearings
Something is not installed right. I would check to make sure the nut on the end of the axle shaft did not back off. Is there a bearing on the inside to support that shaft like a traditional spindle? If so I would check that.
If you don't find either of those it is most likely a defective unit bearing. The unit bearing should be supporting the stub shaft and not allowing the stub shaft to move around like that.
-
Your unit bearing shouldn't allow it to move like that. You sure it is tight in there?
-
It's installed right. There's no nut on the shaft, but there's a snap ring and its seated on the groove. There is a spindle bearing inside the unit bearing and as a matter of fact, the spindle bearing on the other side fell apart last week. Could a crappy lockout be a factor as well? My factory lockout blew up so I have a crappy factory lockout from a 90s truck.
-
yeah the lockout may be the problem. I also think the bearing inside the spindle is either shot or missing.
Unit bearing have warranty?
Something inside the hub / unitbearing should be supporting the shaft
-
Ya, 3 year warranty. I'm going to try to get a new set of lockouts and then warranty the unit bearing.

Ha! Clunk in the front of the truck, you'll never find it! Mine had it, I replaced brakes, shocks, unit bearings, etc... Always did it. Kevin had a similar experience on his Dad's V10 truck. Everyone I have ever rode in with over 100k made the noise randomly. If you haven't heard it, your not listening!
-
My grandpas truck doesn't do it. If it still makes a clunk after I fix the axle shaft sag then I'll probably give up and put some stickers over it.

When y'all do a water pump replacement, do y'all just use the gasket by its self or do y'all add some type of silicone sealant to it also?
-
Ultra black or right stuff is what I use.
-
-
Ya, don't over do the silicone though. Just smear it pretty good on both sides of the gasket.
-
-
i never use sealant if the block surgace is good and true. just the paper gasket. if you feel you must use some rtv only use a little. people over do it and it can cause other problems .. also you must give the rtv time to cure before adding coolant to ensure no leaks and only do one side of the gasket not both
-
If you're only using it on one side of the gasket why use it at all?
-
to fill in inconsistiencies in the block or to make up for slightly warped mounting surface. with that logic why use a gasket if you have rtv...
